FISHING REPORT 2004
Date: Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 16:40:22
Current Report: I'm the luckiest fisherman! Not only do I get to fish every Wednesday with my good buddies but I get to fish on one of the most fish-producing lakes, Lake Shasta. Since February we have caught hundreds of bass, trout and salmon.
Last week Ben and I decided to fish for a new species- sturgeon. We left early out of Packers Bay and headed for the Pitt Arm. Approximately 5 miles north of Arbuckle Flats we started picking up sturgeon on our fishfinder. We finally found some sturgeon laying on the bottom in 30 feet of water and tied up into some trees so the boat was perfectly still. We baited up with shad and threw about 25 yards from the boat. Within 1/2 hour we hooked up. Before we got the boat untied from the trees the sturgeon jumped out of the water. He was about 7 1/2 feet, 200 pounds and the fight was on! We fought him for over an hour. Since he was over 72 inches, we had to release him. Then we moved down 1/2 mile from where we were fishing and tied up and hooked on to another one. This was bigger-9 feet, 300 pounds. This one had a lot of different maneuvers and swam directly away from the boat about 100 yards and then turned and ran directly back at us. I could not reel in fast enough so Ben had the boat in reverse as fast as it would go to keep the line tight. The fish dove straight down below the boat. Finally we tired him out after an hour and 1/2. What an adrenaline rush!
Trout and salmon right now are schooled up and we've been catching limits up to 3 pounds using cripplures, humdingers and e-chips. We have been mostly fishing the Dry Creek Area from 80-100 feet deep. We start at 6:30AM and the bite slows down dramatically by 11:30 which is good because then it is a good time to take a swim!
Right now , for the bass, we are experiencing topwater bite in the early evenings and I have been using my Fat Albert Grub working rock walls and points. Bass are being caught 25-30 feet deep.
I will update these reports throughout August, September and October leading up to the Shasta Lake Trout Derby. The derby will be October 16 & 17. you can register for the derby at shastalaketroutderby.com or calling or writing the Basshole. Our phone number is 530-238-2170 and our mailing address is PO Box 626, Lakehead, CA 96051.
If you are coming to the lake, please stop by the bait shop and I'll give you the current fishing conditions.
Good luck fishing!!

Current Report: Since my last report we've had some amazing fishing! A couple of weeks ago Bob, John, Ben and I were fishing for trout and salmon around Toupee Island and John landed an 8# Brown Trout. At the end of the trip we also caught a few chunky 3 # trout and one small salmon. (Check out the picture in the April edition of the Rabid Angler). Last week, Harold, Mike , Ben and I targeted salmon and we caught seven small(2#) salmon. Next week we're going to check out the McCloud Arm, so log on to my Fish Report in a couple of weeks for our results.
Right now and continuing for the next few weeks the Bass Bite is on! Limits of bass weighing in at 2-3# is common.
Please join the gang at the Basshole for the Kokanee Power Trout & Salmon Derby on May 1st and 2nd. You'll meet old friends and make a lot of new friends. Don't miss the seminar Friday Night before the Derby as it promises to be informing and VERY ENTERTAINING.
Have a great time fishing Shasta Lake and hope to see you all soon!
Dave

Current Report: WOw! What a busy off-season this has been! The Shasta Lake Trout Derby was a huge success and Cheryl placed 10th. For the results, information, and details of this year's tournament please visit shastalaketroutderby.com (one word)
Right now the bass fishing is good and by the first week of March it should be on fire! Expect to limit out with 2# to 3# spotted bass and in the next few weeks we should be in the 4# class. Right now plastics are the ticket-fishing into 25-35 feet of water.
Limits of trout and salmon are being caught using cripplures. I'm fishing the main bodies of water at the depth of 0-15 feet of water.
I'm not fishing today because of the massive rains we're having and the lake has risen over 10 feet in a couple of days! But I plan on fishing every Wednesday from here out to get ready for the Kokanee Power Shasta Lake Trout/Salmon Derby being held May 1st and 2nd. Ben, Curtis and I will be fishing together in the Derby. Boy are we excited! To enter call Kokanee Power Derby Chairman Gary Coe at 916-985-4943, or Harold Jones of Sugar Loaf Cottages at 1-800-953-4432. The weigh-ins will be at the Basshole Bar & Grill/ Tackle & Bait Shop so I'll get a chance to see old friends and meet new ones!!!
Hope you have fun on the lake and catch a lot of quality fish!! Dave
